The Cardinal's Nest

Coming Late Spring 2024

The Inn at Little Washington announces the unveiling of our newest guest house, The Cardinal’s Nest.

This freestanding cottage, located just across the street from The Inn, is named after “La Cardinale”, the very first Relais & Chateaux property, which opened 70 years ago in France. The name is also a tribute to Virginia’s state bird.

The Cardinal’s Nest features two spacious king bedrooms, two full baths with deep soaking tubs, a living area with vaulted ceiling and ancient stone fireplace, pullman kitchen, and private garden with cedar hot tub. The color palette of the interiors was inspired by the plumage of the female cardinal.

The original structure, built in the late 1700s, once served as a summer kitchen for the adjacent Parsonage. The stone fireplace and chimney were retained along with other parts of the original structure in this loving restoration of one of Little Washington’s oldest surviving buildings.

According to local lore, the cottage also once served as guest quarters for dignitaries visiting the church, including bishops and cardinals. Before its official opening this June, it's rumored that The Pope of American Cuisine may be the nest's first overnight guest.
